Erecting the turbine at Ffrwd Farm was a grand engineering feat, taking five days at the start of October during some typically Welsh challenging autumnal weather.”

A refurbished wind turbine

The turbine installed at the site is an 800kW Enercon E48. The turbine was originally installed on a windfarm in 2005 in Holland and was decommissioned in April 2018 as part of a programme of repowering the site with larger machines. The turbine has been serviced from new by Enercon under their full service and maintenance contract.

The turbine has a blade diameter of 48m and the centre of the blades sits 50m above ground level. Due to grid constraints, the turbine has been installed to operate at a maximum of 500kW.

“The turbine’s very large and heavy components travelled from Holland on four separate ferries, arriving at Harwich & Purfleet.  Seven HGV journeys brought them by road to Ffrwd Farm, travelling for the last leg along a farm track which had to be widened, strengthened and extended by 2 km.

Second Wind Energy sourced the turbine and oversaw it’s dismantling and storage, and are continuing to support Granell Coop with Operations and Maintenance of the wind generator.
